The Ascot Park Specialist Physical Education & Sport School Gymnastics Strength & Conditioning Program aims to develop the physical abilities required to achieve success in acrobatic sports such as Artistic Gymnastics, Trampolining and Diving. The program is designed to complement a club-based program; however, external membership is not required, particularly at the development level. Ascot Park Primary School students will have an opportunity to compete at the Gymnastics SA Schools Challenge in Term 3 each year.

The Gymnastics Strength & Conditioning Program is focused on 5 main areas of development:

  • Core Strength
  • Arm Strength
  • Leg Strength
  • Handstand and
  • Flexibility

Athletes are grouped based on their physical abilities, not competition level, with an increasing level of difficulty/complexity of skills at each level:

Development:
Introduce basic body shapes with a focus on developing coordination, static strength, and basic flexibility.

Intermediate:
Develop strength movements such as chin ups, dips and squats, introduce balance in handstand and static flexibility such as bridge.

Advanced:
Advanced handstand development including press to handstand, introduce power development and dynamic flexibility such as bridge & recover and walkovers.

Athletes’ progress will be measured each term via a profile test to measure personal improvement and guide program development.

We, at Ascot Park Primary School, acknowledge that the land on which we work, learn and play is the traditional land of the Kaurna People. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and to the young leaders of tomorrow. We recognise their ongoing connection to Country and in the spirit of reconciliation, we will take action to respect the animals, lands, waters and cultural beliefs of our First Nations Peoples.
